Also examines 'the affiliations that Vathek and the Episodes may have with the Gothic tradition." Beckford emphasizes the relationship between the creative imagination and the ideology of power in these works.

CLAÉSSON, Dick.William Beckford av Fonthill, Wilts., 1760-1844. En forskningsöversikt, Litteraturvetenskapliga institu-tionen. Göteborgs, Sweden: Göteborgs universitet, Meddelanden nr 17, 1995. An introductory bibliographical essay, discussing Beckford research listing and discussing some 80 plus books and articles on Beckford and introducing the author to a Swedish audience. Divided in two parts: 1) a life, and 2) a survey of research. Intended as an introduction to Beckfordiana.

CLAÉSSON, Dick. The Transport of Pleasure. MS. Beckford d.10 (Fonthill Foreshadowed); utgiven och kommenterad av Dick Claésson, Göteborg, Sweden: Litteraturvetenskapliga institutionen, Göteborgs universitet, Meddelanden nr 21, Göteborg 1996. An edition of The Transport of Pleasure (MS. Beckford d.10), and Hylas (MS Beckford d.9), never before published; with commentary, notes and introduction in Swedish, but texts of manuscripts in original English. Contains also a two-page summary in English of the introduction. Both texts were written in early youth, circa 1777-78, and are important specimens of Beckford's style and favourite subject matter. The introduction purports to perform a different reading of the The Transport of Pleasure than has hitherto been performed; a reading/interpretation that focuses on the text as fiction and not as a biographical piece of evidence.

Throughout Vathek, Beckford excels in the presentation of "un imaginaire de la perversion" [perverse imagination] and "un plaisir dans le démoniaque" [a pleasure in the demoniac].
